Kenya has officially launched the AI & Cloud Pioneer Initiative, a strategic move to solidify its position as a regional hub for artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing. The announcement was made at the Huawei Cloud Summit 2025, held in Nairobi under the theme “Accelerate Intelligence, Ignite Smart Kenya.”

The event attracted over 500 stakeholders from government, academia, and industry, providing a platform for showcasing cutting-edge technologies, collaborative discussions, and forward-looking strategies to power Kenya’s digital transformation.

Huawei Champions Digital Kenya

Jacqueline Shi, President of Global Marketing and Sales Service at Huawei Cloud, emphasized the timeliness of embracing intelligent technologies:

“The best time to develop cloud and AI is now. For young Kenya, talent is key. For intelligent Kenya, AI is the foundation.”

Shi reaffirmed Huawei’s commitment to nurturing Kenya’s digital potential by empowering youth and businesses with scalable tech solutions.

Gao Fei, CEO of Huawei Kenya, echoed this sentiment:

“Huawei has been part of Kenya’s digital journey for 27 years — from telecom infrastructure to driving today’s intelligent economy.”

Kenya’s Strategic Cloud Policy

Washington Okoth, Permanent Secretary for ICT Infrastructure at the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy (MICDE), outlined the government’s vision, which includes a shift from legacy data centers to modern cloud infrastructure and AI-based systems. The Kenya Cloud Policy will serve as a foundation for scalable innovation and national data sovereignty.

Product Innovations Unveiled

Huawei used the summit to launch its latest technologies tailored for the Kenyan market. Roc Bai, Huawei Cloud Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, introduced the Huawei Cloud Stack 8.5 (HCS 8.5) — a hybrid cloud solution featuring over 120 cloud services and AI capabilities, optimized for local deployment in government, finance, and enterprise sectors.

Also introduced was an upgraded DataArts platform, designed to accelerate AI training and inference through a knowledge-driven framework.

Frank Shi, Managing Director of Huawei Cloud Kenya, revealed five sector-specific cloud solutions for government, telecom, finance, media, and e-commerce.

“These offerings combine Huawei’s global expertise with Kenya’s local needs to fast-track smart transformation,” he said.

Social Impact and Success Stories

Huawei spotlighted its Cloud for Good initiative, highlighting how AI and cloud are reshaping agriculture, education, healthcare, and financial inclusion in Kenya. Notable success stories include:

  • M-PESA: Now running its multi-country platform on Huawei Cloud, handling 21 billion+ transactions annually.
  • Konza Technopolis: Kenya’s smart city project hosts the country’s first Tier 3 cloud data center, powering over 70 government services.
  • Royal Media Services: Built an OTT platform on Huawei Cloud, reducing content launch cycles from three days to one.
  • Kilimall: Scaled up to triple online traffic during sales events, thanks to Huawei’s cloud infrastructure.

Conclusion

The launch of the Kenya AI & Cloud Pioneer Initiative signals a bold leap toward an intelligent digital economy. Backed by Huawei’s global tech leadership and Kenya’s youthful talent, the initiative aims to drive inclusive growth, sustainability, and global competitiveness.
