Kenyan Students Travel to China for Huawei ICT Global Finals 2025
A team of 12 top-performing Kenyan students has departed for Shenzhen, China, to compete in the prestigious Huawei ICT Competition Global Finals, scheduled for May 20–24, 2025.
The delegation, officially flagged off by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos and Ambassador Jane Makori, Director General for Asia Affairs, will join more than 160,000 students from over 2,200 institutions worldwide. Participants will showcase their skills in cloud computing, networking, innovation, and AI technologies.
Empowering Kenya’s Digital Future
CS Migos praised the competition for its role in youth empowerment and digital transformation, stating:
“The Huawei ICT Competition is about more than just tech — it’s a pathway to progress, inclusion, and opportunity.”
This year’s Kenyan team reflects diverse talent, with strong female representation, and is supported by four lecturers and a motivational coach.
Since its inception in Kenya, the Huawei ICT program has trained over 12,000 university students and 500 TVET trainees, focusing on AI, data communications, and cloud technologies.
Pride and Optimism from Kenya’s Tech Ambassadors
Stephen Zang, Deputy CEO of Huawei Kenya, expressed pride in the team and appreciation for government support:
“We are proud of Kenya’s rising ICT talent and grateful for the continued partnership with educational institutions.”
One of the participating students, Eric Muriithi Karimi, a Computer Science major from Egerton University, shared the team’s excitement:
“We’re ready, excited, and proud to represent Kenya — and confident we’ll return with medals and make our country proud.”
In 2024, Kenyan teams performed remarkably well at the finals, bagging two First Prizes and three Third Prizes, placing Kenya among the top global contenders.
The trip also coincides with the Global ICT Accelerating Education Transformation Summit, where global leaders from UNESCO, education ministries, and Huawei will discuss the future of digital learning.
