Huawei has officially introduced HarmonyOS 6 with API level 23, marking the next major evolution of its self-developed operating system. Alongside the announcement, the company has launched developer beta recruitment in China, inviting developers to begin testing and adapting their applications for the new platform.
Huawei says HarmonyOS 6 delivers a refreshed user experience, smoother system interactions, and notable efficiency gains across core system applications. The Mate 80 lineup sits at the front of the rollout. All variants, including standard, Pro, Pro Max, RS Master, and Air editions, qualify for the developer beta once updated to HarmonyOS 6.0.0.130 or later, depending on model configuration.
The Mate 70 family also receives broad support. Huawei has opened multiple firmware tracks for regional and hardware variations, giving developers flexibility across different SKUs. Premium editions, including Pro, Pro+, and RS Extraordinary Master models, also meet the requirements with compatible system builds.
This wide coverage signals Huawei’s intent to make HarmonyOS 6 the primary software platform across its flagship smartphone range.
Foldables and Pura series join the rollout
Huawei has also included its latest foldable devices in the developer beta. Both Mate X7 and Mate X6 models, including Collector’s Editions and Ultimate Design variants, qualify with the appropriate system versions installed.
The Pura lineup, Huawei’s camera-focused smartphone series, also plays a central role. Pura 80, Pura 80 Pro, Pro+, Ultra, and Pura X devices all support HarmonyOS 6 API 23 testing. HarmonyOS 6 extends well beyond smartphones. Huawei has opened developer access on several tablet lines, including the MatePad Pro 13.2-inch (2025), MatePad Mini, MatePad Edge, and MatePad 11.5 (2026).
Some MatePad Edge and MatePad 11.5 models require HarmonyOS 5.1 base versions before upgrading into the HarmonyOS 6 beta path. This staged approach allows Huawei to maintain compatibility while gradually transitioning tablet hardware into the new API framework.
