The Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G Youth offers 5G connectivity, a 64MP quad camera, and a 6.5″ display powered by the Dimensity 800U chipset. Learn more about its features and performance in this review.

Introduction

The Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G Youth, released in October 2020, is a mid-range smartphone offering from Huawei that delivers 5G capabilities at an affordable price. It features a 6.5-inch display, a powerful 64MP quad-camera setup, and a 4000mAh battery with fast charging. Powered by the Mediatek Dimensity 800U chipset, this phone provides excellent performance for its price range, catering to users who want a modern 5G smartphone without breaking the bank.

In this review, we’ll explore the design, performance, camera capabilities, battery life, and more to give you a comprehensive overview of the Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G Youth.

Design and Build Quality

The Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G Youth has a sleek design, typical of Huawei’s Nova series, with a modern and polished aesthetic. The device measures 162.3 x 75 x 8.6 mm and weighs 189g, making it a comfortable fit in hand without feeling too heavy. The slightly curved back and rounded corners contribute to a smooth grip, while the phone’s design looks premium for its price.

Available in four colors—Crush Green, Space Silver, Midnight Black, and Purple—the phone offers an array of options for users who prefer a stylish appearance. The side-mounted fingerprint sensor is both fast and convenient, doubling as the power button.

The Nova 7 SE 5G Youth is equipped with dual SIM capabilities, allowing users to stay connected on multiple networks simultaneously.

Display

The Nova 7 SE 5G Youth comes with a 6.5-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, giving it a pixel density of around 405 ppi. This ensures sharp and crisp visuals, making it ideal for media consumption, gaming, and daily tasks. The HDR10 support enhances contrast and colors when viewing compatible content, offering a more immersive experience.

While the display is not AMOLED, it provides good brightness levels and solid color reproduction, making it a reliable option for users looking for a budget-friendly phone with a high-quality screen.

Performance and Software

At the heart of the Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G Youth is the Mediatek Dimensity 800U chipset, a 7nm octa-core processor with two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.4 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz. This processor, combined with the Mali-G57 MC3 GPU and 8GB of RAM, ensures smooth performance across a range of tasks, from gaming to multitasking.

The phone runs on Android 10 with EMUI 10.1, though it lacks Google Play Services. Instead, users will rely on Huawei’s AppGallery for downloading apps. Despite this, the device still performs well in most cases, with Huawei’s HMS (Huawei Mobile Services) offering a growing ecosystem of apps.

The phone’s 128GB of internal storage provides ample space for apps, media, and games, though there is no option to expand storage via a microSD card.

Camera Capabilities

The Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G Youth features a quad-camera setup that delivers impressive results for its price:

  • 64 MP wide lens (f/1.8, 26mm): The primary sensor captures stunning, high-resolution photos with rich details and accurate colors. It’s particularly effective in well-lit environments, but low-light photography is also decent thanks to its large aperture.
  • 8 MP ultrawide lens (f/2.4, 17mm): This sensor is perfect for capturing landscapes and group shots, with a 120-degree field of view that fits more into each frame.
  • 2 MP macro lens (f/2.4): The macro lens allows users to take close-up shots with great detail, although its use is limited due to the lower resolution.
  • 2 MP depth sensor (f/2.4): The depth sensor helps create portrait shots with a pleasing background blur (bokeh effect), making it ideal for portrait photography.

For video, the phone supports 4K@30fps and 1080p@30fps recording, delivering clear and stable footage.

On the front, the device houses a 16 MP selfie camera with an f/2.0 aperture, which is capable of capturing detailed and well-lit selfies. It also supports HDR and 1080p video recording at 30fps, ensuring clear video calls and vlogs.

Battery Life and Charging

The Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G Youth is equipped with a 4000mAh battery, which provides ample power to last through a full day of moderate use. Whether you’re streaming videos, browsing the web, or playing games, the battery life is satisfactory, especially with the power efficiency offered by the Dimensity 800U chipset.

The phone supports 40W fast charging, which can charge the device from 0 to 70% in just 30 minutes (as advertised by Huawei). This feature is particularly useful for users who need to quickly top up their phone’s battery throughout the day. Additionally, the device supports 5W reverse wired charging, allowing users to charge smaller devices like earbuds directly from their phone.

Connectivity

The Nova 7 SE 5G Youth supports 5G connectivity, ensuring fast download and upload speeds for users in 5G-supported areas. The phone also includes dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, BDS, and QZSS, offering a comprehensive range of connectivity options.

It features USB Type-C 2.0 for charging and data transfer, and it retains the 3.5mm headphone jack, a feature that many users still appreciate for wired audio connections.

Price and Availability

The Huawei Nova 7 SE 5G Youth is priced at around 290 EUR, making it one of the more affordable 5G smartphones on the market. Its price-to-performance ratio is excellent, especially considering the inclusion of 5G, a 64MP camera, and fast charging.
