Explore the Huawei Nova 8 Pro 4G, featuring a 6.72″ OLED display, Kirin 985 chipset, quad-camera system, and fast 66W charging. Read the full review to learn more about its design, performance, and features.

Introduction

The Huawei Nova 8 Pro 4G, released in June 2021, is a premium mid-range smartphone that offers a blend of stunning design, powerful performance, and excellent camera capabilities. Although it lacks 5G and Google Play Services, the Nova 8 Pro 4G still delivers in many areas, making it an appealing choice for users who prioritize display quality, speed, and photography.

With a 6.72-inch OLED display that supports a 120Hz refresh rate, a Kirin 985 5G chipset, and a quad-camera system, the Nova 8 Pro 4G is a versatile device that excels in entertainment, gaming, and photography. In this review, we’ll take a closer look at its design, performance, camera, battery life, and more.

Design and Build Quality

The Huawei Nova 8 Pro 4G stands out with its sleek and modern design. It has a glass front and back with an aluminum frame, giving it a premium look and feel. The device measures 163.3 x 74.1 x 7.9 mm and weighs 184g, making it relatively lightweight and easy to handle despite its large display.

The phone is available in four elegant colors: Black, Blue, Green, and White, allowing users to choose according to their style preferences. Its 91.7% screen-to-body ratio provides an immersive viewing experience, perfect for media consumption and gaming.

Display

The 6.72-inch OLED display is one of the standout features of the Huawei Nova 8 Pro 4G. With a resolution of 1236 x 2676 pixels and a pixel density of 439 ppi, the screen is crisp, vibrant, and offers excellent color accuracy. The 120Hz refresh rate ensures smooth scrolling and fluid animations, making the device ideal for gaming and media consumption.

The display also supports HDR10, providing enhanced contrast and dynamic range for video playback. The large screen size, combined with the curved edges, makes watching movies and playing games an immersive experience.

Performance

Under the hood, the Huawei Nova 8 Pro 4G is powered by the Kirin 985 5G chipset, which is built on a 7nm process. The octa-core CPU consists of 1×2.58 GHz Cortex-A76, 3×2.40 GHz Cortex-A76, and 4×1.84 GHz Cortex-A55 cores, ensuring smooth performance across a range of tasks, from multitasking to gaming. The Mali-G77 (8-core) GPU handles graphics well, making the phone suitable for running demanding games and applications.

The device comes with 8GB of RAM and storage options of 128GB or 256GB. While there’s no option for expandable storage, the UFS technology ensures fast read and write speeds for smooth app launching and file handling.

The Nova 8 Pro 4G runs EMUI 11 based on Android 10, but like other recent Huawei devices, it does not have Google Play Services. Instead, users rely on Huawei’s AppGallery for app downloads and third-party app stores for additional software needs.

Camera

The Huawei Nova 8 Pro 4G comes equipped with a versatile quad-camera setup that includes:

  • 64 MP main camera (f/1.8, wide, PDAF): Captures sharp and detailed images, even in low light, thanks to Huawei’s AI-powered image processing.
  • 8 MP ultrawide camera (f/2.4, 120˚, 17mm): Ideal for landscape photography or group shots, offering a wider field of view.
  • 2 MP depth sensor (f/2.4): Enhances portrait shots by providing better depth of field and background blur.
  • 2 MP macro camera (f/2.4): Allows users to capture close-up details of objects.

The main camera can record videos in 4K, while the ultrawide lens offers impressive versatility for capturing different types of scenes. The camera also features HDR, panorama, and gyro-EIS for stable video recording.

On the front, the phone sports a dual selfie camera setup:

  • 32 MP ultrawide camera (f/2.4, 100˚): Perfect for wide-angle selfies or group shots.
  • 16 MP wide camera (f/2.0): Ensures high-quality selfies with good detail and color reproduction.

The selfie camera supports 1080p video recording, making it ideal for vlogging or video calls.

Battery and Charging

The Huawei Nova 8 Pro 4G is powered by a 4000mAh battery, which provides enough juice for a full day of moderate use. Whether you’re browsing the web, watching videos, or gaming, the battery holds up well.

One of the most impressive features of this device is its 66W wired fast charging. Huawei claims that the phone can charge up to 60% in just 15 minutes and reach 100% in 35 minutes, which is incredibly fast for a mid-range device. The phone also supports 5W reverse wired charging, allowing you to charge other devices, such as earbuds, from your phone.

Connectivity and Other Features

The Huawei Nova 8 Pro 4G supports a wide range of connectivity options, including Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, and NFC for contactless payments. It also comes with USB Type-C 2.0 for charging and data transfer.

The device is equipped with a variety of sensors, including a fingerprint scanner (under display, optical), accelerometer, gyroscope, proximity sensor, and compass, providing a full suite of features for enhanced user experience.

For positioning, the phone includes GPS, GLONASS, BDS, GALILEO, QZSS, and NavIC, ensuring accurate navigation and location tracking.

Price and Availability

The Huawei Nova 8 Pro 4G is priced at around 400 EUR, positioning it as a premium mid-range device. Considering its powerful specs, impressive display, and fast charging capabilities, the phone offers excellent value for users looking for a high-performance device without breaking the bank.
