Nairobi, Kenya – May 19, 2025
Kenya has officially launched its AI & Cloud Pioneer Initiative during the Huawei Cloud Summit 2025, marking a significant step toward becoming Africa’s hub for digital innovation and intelligent infrastructure.
The announcement was made by Washington Okoth, Permanent Secretary for ICT Infrastructure at the Ministry of Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy (MICDE). Speaking at the Nairobi summit, Okoth unveiled the Kenya Cloud Policy, a transformative blueprint that prioritizes cloud-first strategies, data ecosystems, and AI-driven solutions to foster inclusive socio-economic growth.
“Kenya is committed to being a regional AI leader. With our new cloud policy, we’re laying the foundation for smart, scalable digital services,” said Okoth.
Held under the theme “Accelerate Intelligence, Ignite Smart Kenya,” the summit attracted over 500 key stakeholders from government, academia, and industry, all eager to explore how intelligent technologies can fuel Kenya’s digital ambitions.

One standout example was M-PESA, the mobile money service now running across seven African countries via Huawei Cloud, processing over 21 billion transactions annually.
Additionally, Kenya’s Konza Technopolis, the nation’s first smart city, has deployed a Tier 3 data center hosting over 70 government apps and 120 business platforms.
Training 6,000+ Kenyan Youth Annually
The summit concluded with Huawei signing an MoU with MICDE to train more than 6,000 students per year in digital and ICT skills. Initiatives like DigiTruck and Seeds for the Future continue to bridge the digital divide and build Kenya’s tech talent pipeline.
With government backing, global tech partnerships, and a maturing digital economy, Kenya is now firmly positioned to lead Africa’s AI revolution.
