Huawei Mate 80 May Launch in Q4 2025, Avoiding Clash With iPhone 17

Huawei might skip its traditional September launch to dodge Apple’s iPhone 17 face-off

Huawei appears to be shifting the launch schedule for its next-generation flagship. According to recent leaks, the Huawei Mate 80 series might debut in Q4 2025, rather than its traditional September launch that typically pits it directly against Apple’s new iPhones. This change may help avoid a direct clash with the iPhone 17, set to launch in September.

The information comes from reliable Weibo tipster DigitalChatStation, who revealed that Huawei has started testing 2.5D flat screens for all Mate 80 variants — a notable design shift from the curved displays of past models.

A New Display Era for Huawei Flagships

Huawei is reportedly ditching curved panels in favor of flat 2.5D screens, not just for the Mate 80, but also across its Pura 90, mid-range, and entry-level lines. This shift marks the end of an era and a move toward more practical, minimalist designs.

Notably, the Mate 80 lineup may introduce punch-hole cutouts, and the ultra-narrow bezels promise an immersive look, especially for the larger models.

Expected screen sizes include:

  • 6.3 and 6.5-inch compact variants
  • 6.7 and 6.8-inch premium models

Breaking the Apple-Huawei Showdown Tradition

Since 2022, Huawei has strategically launched its Mate series alongside Apple’s iPhones:

  • Mate 50 vs iPhone 14
  • Mate XT tri-fold vs iPhone 16

However, 2025 could mark a strategic pivot. Huawei may choose to unveil another dynamic product — possibly a foldable or AI-centric flagship — during Apple’s iPhone 17 reveal window, saving the Mate 80 for Q4 instead.

Other Huawei Flagships Also Facing Delays

This rumored shift follows another delay: the Huawei Pura 80 series, initially slated for Q1, is now expected in June 2025. Sources claim this delay is due to new camera enhancements and further hardware refinements.

Conclusion

If confirmed, the Huawei Mate 80 launch in Q4 2025 could be a tactical move to:

  • Avoid direct competition with Apple’s iPhone 17
  • Refine product design with new flat screen technology
  • Reposition the Mate series for better market impact

As 2025 unfolds, Huawei’s flagship roadmap seems increasingly fluid. Whether the Mate 80 avoids Apple or confronts it later with an entirely different approach, one thing is clear — Huawei is recalibrating its strategy for the global premium smartphone market.
