Huawei Pura 80 to Launch with Dual Periscope Lens, Pushes Boundaries of Optical Zoom
Huawei is set to unveil its latest flagship smartphone—the Pura 80 series—this Wednesday, introducing a bold innovation in mobile photography. The upcoming Huawei Pura 80 Pro+ will feature a dual focal-length periscope lens, marking a major shift in zoom lens design for smartphones.
The camera system adopts a folded optical structure and utilizes mechanical components to alternate between two dedicated optical zoom levels. While not fully seamless, the gap between zoom levels is managed through advanced software interpolation, according to reliable tech source Digital Chat Station.
In parallel, Huawei is also developing true continuous optical zoom, a technology that enables smooth, lossless magnification using a single lens element—unlike digital or hybrid zoom which degrades image quality. Though this feature is still under development, its future implementation promises enhanced image clarity, color fidelity, and white balance consistency.
Huawei isn’t alone in this race. Chinese rivals like Oppo and Vivo are also experimenting with next-generation zoom systems. Earlier models, such as the Oppo Find X7 Ultra, already feature innovative camera modules including dual periscope lenses and large 1-inch sensors for high-end photography.
The Huawei Pura 80 series represents another step forward in redefining what smartphones can do with optical hardware, and the brand continues to set benchmarks in mobile imaging technology.
