At the Huawei Network Summit 2025 in Hong Kong, Huawei and the World WLAN Application Alliance (WAA) introduced a groundbreaking white paper titled Smart Campus Wi-Fi CSI Sensing Development and Use Cases. This release highlights how the integration of Wi-Fi Channel State Information (CSI) sensing is reshaping smart campus environments across Asia Pacific.

The white paper dives into the evolving role of Wi-Fi—from basic connectivity to an advanced sensing solution that supports intelligent campus operations. Termed as “Wi-Fi + X,” this approach allows standard wireless infrastructure to detect human presence, monitor micro-movements, and even sense breathing and heart rates—all without the need for direct contact or intrusive equipment.

This innovation is already finding valuable applications. In hospitality, it enables seamless guest check-ins and energy optimization. In school dormitories, it enhances nighttime security. In industrial environments, it detects unauthorized intrusions in restricted zones. Meanwhile, healthcare facilities can use the technology to monitor vital signs and respond quickly to emergencies like falls.

Huawei’s Xinghe Intelligent Campus Solution is central to this progress. By leveraging the capabilities of Wi-Fi 7, its access points function like sonar, interpreting minute changes in signal patterns to determine environmental shifts. Combined with artificial intelligence and millimeter-wave radar, these systems can detect unauthorized surveillance equipment, monitor patient movement, and maintain privacy—all autonomously.

Shawn Zhao, President of Huawei’s Campus Network Domain, emphasized the strategic shift: “We are expanding the role of access points to connect and sense everything. ‘Wi-Fi + X’ is the key to building digital twins of campuses, improving energy efficiency, ensuring security, and enhancing management.”

As Huawei continues to innovate in WLAN technologies, it also pledges deeper collaboration with global partners to expand the Wi-Fi CSI sensing ecosystem. The goal is to push the limits of smart campus capabilities and set a new benchmark for safe, efficient, and intelligent learning and working environments.
