Huawei Launches HarmonyOS PC to Challenge Windows Dominance
Huawei has officially launched HarmonyOS PC, marking its entry into the desktop operating system arena and setting the stage for a new era of competition with Windows and macOS. The announcement was made during Huawei’s HarmonyOS Computer Technology and Ecosystem Communication Event, with Zhu Dongdong, President of Huawei’s Tablet and PC Division, leading the presentation.
This move strengthens Huawei’s ongoing push for technological self-reliance, especially in the wake of geopolitical pressures and previous sanctions.
What Is HarmonyOS PC?
Huawei’s HarmonyOS PC (called Hongmeng Computer in China) is built around three major components:
HarmonyOS Base
At its core lies the HarmonyOS Kernel, the Ark Engine for enhanced graphics and interface performance, and the StarShield security architecture. Together with various backend components, this foundation ensures speed, safety, and adaptability.
HarmonyOS Ecosystem
The system already supports more than 2,000 universal applications and over 150 exclusive apps, including essentials like WPS Office. This extensive ecosystem aims to offer users everything they need for daily computing.
HarmonyOS Experience
The OS is optimized for compatibility, working seamlessly with over 1,000 external devices, including 800 standard peripherals and 20 categories such as keyboards, monitors, and mice. An additional 200+ devices, like printers and scanners, are also supported.
A Smart OS with AI Integration
One of HarmonyOS PC’s standout features is its deep integration with artificial intelligence, aligning it with Huawei’s broader vision of a smart, interconnected ecosystem. While Huawei hasn’t disclosed much about the interface, an official preview shows a dock-style desktop layout reminiscent of macOS.
Release Date and Market Potential
Huawei announced that the first PCs featuring HarmonyOS will hit the market on May 19, 2025. Whether HarmonyOS PC can disrupt the global duopoly of Windows and macOS remains to be seen, but Huawei has a major advantage: China’s massive domestic market and neighboring regions could help position HarmonyOS as the third dominant desktop OS.
What began as Huawei’s response to being blacklisted and losing access to Google services has now evolved into a bold vision — an operating system that powers everything, from mobile to desktop.
