Huawei Launches HarmonyOS 5 with AI-Powered PC Experience
Huawei has officially launched HarmonyOS 5, a groundbreaking update that signals the debut of its self-developed PC operating system. Unveiled during the HarmonyOS Computer Technology and Ecosystem Communication event in China, HarmonyOS 5 builds upon HarmonyOS Next, first introduced in October 2024. Notably, the OS is entirely independent of Android and is engineered to power Huawei’s next-generation computers.
Key Innovations in HarmonyOS 5
HarmonyOS 5 is packed with AI-driven capabilities and support for up to 1,000 external devices. Huawei has optimized more than 150 apps specifically for its computer ecosystem, alongside the integration of 2,000+ universal apps.
The system features the Ark graphics engine to deliver enhanced visuals, dynamic wallpapers, multi-window support, and better multitasking. Users can enjoy a Windows-like interface, complete with customizable themes, taskbars, and window arrangements.
New visual features include gravity effects on the home screen and animated photographic app icons. The OS also introduces gesture-based navigation—like a three-finger swipe to return to the home screen or access multitasking tools.
AI Assistant and Cross-Device Smart Office
A major highlight of HarmonyOS 5 is its built-in AI assistant, which offers multilingual document translation (21 languages), content summarization, report generation, and itinerary planning. It supports voice, text, and image input and can recognize on-screen content for contextual assistance.
The system also includes a Smart Office suite designed to sync tasks across smartphones, tablets, and PCs. Users can seamlessly share peripherals, transfer files at high speeds, and collaborate across multiple devices.
Robust Security and User Privacy
Huawei introduces a Star Shield architecture to bolster user privacy and system security. All apps must undergo strict checks before being published in the HarmonyOS App Market. The OS provides a unified, secure, and intelligent ecosystem that connects all Huawei devices with ease.
What’s Next for Huawei Devices?
While Huawei confirmed that upcoming PCs will run HarmonyOS 5, it hasn’t yet revealed whether current models will be compatible. Still, the company’s ecosystem-first approach shows strong intent to deliver a fully integrated user experience across all its devices.
With HarmonyOS 5, Huawei positions itself as a major contender in the global OS market—offering a unique blend of AI innovation, performance, and user customization.
